Yesterday's Daily Mail carried an outrageous and ill-informed article: The Toxic Truth about Vitamin Supplements. In it, the journalist self-diagnoses IBS to be a direct side-effect from taking glucosamine supplements. The journalist then decided to use that as an excuse to review four other supplements with 'potential side-effects' including Calcium, citing the recent negative calcium research. Despite the title of the article, none of the five supplements referred to is a vitamin!
You will find the online version of the article here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1305534/The-toxic-truth-vitamin-supplements-Health-pills-millions-barely-second-thought-harm-good.html, and as you will see this now includes a response from the HFMA directly following the article
The HFMA have also produced a statement, and have written a strongly-worded letter to the Mail's editor requesting a retraction
On a more positive note, we also wanted to let you know about a separate positive story which appeared yesterday across the nationals including the Daily Mail, The Independent, the Daily Express and the Metro. It is on new research highlighting the extent to which vitamin D protects against a wide range of diseases
Here is the Press Association release that drove the articles: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5gi6O1mATFke-91svk_uSYO_QDTcA
